Non-focused, disruptive and highly active behaviour

When we visited a remedial maths class we were met by a group of extremely active children receiving maths support. They were jumping in and out of their seats and were having a lot of difficulty focusing on the task at hand. When they were each given a Sebezaphone, they immediately started speaking, reading and reciting numbers into the phone.

Suddenly they became very focused and calmed down as they listened to their own voices. They became more willing to fully engage with a worksheet. A couple of them chose to explore the number line displayed on the wall, saying the numbers into their phone as they walked along. They even practised counting in multiples of 2, 3 and 5. They were captivated by the sound of their own voices.

The teacher was now free to work individually with learners knowing the others were productively engaged.
